G. Mauro, the manager of revival

From a place for few intellectuals, to a location hosting exhibitions, concerts and weddings. The Correale Museum has recently experienced extraordinary change. Credit for this goes to the synergy between the Municipality and the Board of Directors, with the chairman Gaetano Mauro as a major player.
What drives an experienced businessman, owner of the Gardenia Hotel, to engage in the Correale Museum project?
«In 2010 the mayor Giuseppe Cuomo asked me to join the Board of Directors. I gladly accepted, as I was aware that the Museum needed renewal. At the time, it was open from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., hosting few exhibitions and book presentations. My aim was to open it to the city, and I confirmed my commitment in 2017, when I became Chairman».
Which goals did the Board achieve?
«Since I joined the Board, I have involved univeristies and associations to relaunch the Museum. Opening hours were extended and weddings started to be held. The façade restyling and the electric and lighting system renovation was carried out, a video surveillance system, new draperies and entrance turnstiles were added».
How many visitors come to the Museum per year?
«At the time when I arrived, there were 9 thousands. Today, including those who come for concerts and weddings, there are 30 thousand visitors per year. The result can be further improved, since Sorrento has three million visitors per year. In view of this, during the first ten months of my term as Chairman, the Board of Directors promoted a number of events, studying new organization strategies for further development».
How did the idea of hosting the Opera & Lirica concerts in the Museum come about?
«It is a musical programme of high artistic value, allowing music lovers to experience an hour of intense emotions and enabling the Museum managers to further promote the Foundation and all the wonderful art works kept in it».
Is this the reason why you opened the Hall of Mirrors to marriages?
«Of course. The Museum was chosen as an alternative location to the Saint Francis’ cloister. This intuition allowed us again to let the treasures of our Foundation be appreciated. It worked: from 10 celebrations in the first year, the Museum was able to host more than 50 in 2017».
What are the next objectives?
«We are sorting out the archives and inventories. In short time, we will start restoration works and launch new interesting initiatives. One thing is for sure: we want to increase our commitment, for the Museum and for Sorrento».
